Fun Events at CSC

Hi everybody,

This is Charlotte Dixon, the new outreach person! At last week’s sundowner  we cooked up the fun idea of a Halloween EVE party onFriday October 30th, at the usual sundowner time of 7 p.m. So put on your favorite costume ( or none), bring a decoration for the clubhouse and of course something to eat! Can we say CANDY? Best costumes will have significant recognition( more candy?)
Also a heads up, that we will be having our 3rd annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Clubhouse this year! More to follow on that!

SYC PHRF “WIC” Wednesday Evening Summer Sailing Series

CSC Sailors —
It comes with great excitement and the passion for our sport to forward along this email.  In conjunction with Billy Bremer and Gebel Sesse, we have worked hard to put together yet another local PHRF racing series which will be hosted by the Savannah Yacht Club (SYC).  See below email and attached NOR.  In short, this will be a summer season 10 race series every Wednesday evening starting next Wednesday, June 17 to Wednesday, August 19 and will be in Pursuit format.  We will start each race at 6pm sharp from SYC and hope to be done by or before8pm and retreat to SYC’s Sail Loft for an informal cocktail reception after each race.  All attendees will be sponsored by a SYC member to set up individual payment details for the food and beverage offerings.  For registration purposes, we have set everything up through Regatta Network.  Captains, please follow the below link to download the Sailing Instructions and register your boats.

Again, none of this would not have happened if our sailing community did not come together.  I’m encouraged and feel equally responsible for bringing back PHRF racing to Savannah.  See you all on the water…next Wednesdayevening.
Onward and Upward,

Beer and Boats

Mark you calendars, save the dates for good times on and off the water.  This Friday, June 12th we would like to mix a little productive activity with our usual Friday night fun.  We’re going to sort through our pile of small boat rigging that is in the storage area next to the clubhouse.  No need to be a small boat rigging expert, just help bring out the parts so those that are the experts ( I use that term loosely of course. ) can put them together and find out how many complete boats we have.
On Saturday, June 13th, starting at 12:00 p.m. and thereafter we will celebrate with beverage and bites and taking turns trying out our fleet of small boats.
As always, BYOB and snacks to share.

The fifth race of the series is coming up this Saturday, June 6th

Hello Race Fans —

The fifth race of the series is coming up this Saturday, June 6th.  All captains, please email me by 12:00 pm on Thursday (June 4th) to let us know if you’re racing on Saturday.  Remember you need to let me know if you want to sail in Class “A” (Spinnaker) or Class “B” (Non-Spinnaker/ Cruising).  We will start the race at 2:00 pm close to Government Marker 25 on the Wilmington River.  Lady In Red (J/22) will be the race committee for this race.  If you have any questions, email me at or call my cell at 912-308-1319.  As explained below under the Race Rules section, this fifth race will be under PHRF format.

Race Rules

The series will consist of 10 races.  7 PHRF Races and 3 Pursuit Races

To qualify for the PHRF Races, each competing sailboat must compete in at least 5 races which will qualify them to throw out 2 races.  A race shall consists of a minimum of 3 sailboats.  PHRF ratings will be used for time on time.  The national average per USAA High Low website will be the starting basis for these numbers.

For PHRF Races, the starting sequence shall consist of 3 short blasts on a horn at 6 minutes before start time (2:00 pm), a 5 minute start sequence with 1 horn blast, a 4 minute 1 horn blast, a 1 minute 1 horn blast, and for the start a single starting horn blast.

Honor all government marks not labeled as course marks and obey all Sailing Federation Rules of Racing.  If any boat uses its engine to clear a grounding situation it must complete one penalty turn once under sail again.  All boats must carry a VHF radio and a stopwatch.  All boats must turn in their own ELAPSED time from their own stopwatch.  We do not have the ability to record finish times for each boat.  If you are unable to give us an elapsed time at the end of the race (from your own vessel’s stopwatch) that you know to be accurate; YOU WILL NOT BE SCORED FOR THAT RACE.  Please text your elapsed finish times to 912-308-1319 immediately after completing your race.

Races will be cancelled at the discretion of the race committee prior to the start due to varied weather conditions (ex. winds greater than 25 knots sustained, steady rain one half hour before race time, tornado watch, etc…).

Separately, we will also be running 3 Pursuit Races for this upcoming series.  There are no throw outs in the Pursuit Race format.  Dates for the Pursuit Races are highlighted in the below calendar.  Rules to follow along prior to those selected race days.  Hopefully these staggered starts will promote more sailboats on the water and friendly competition.  In this format there will be no need to keep an elapsed time.  All finishes will be recorded in the order each boat crosses the finish line.

There will be a 2-hour time limit on short races and 3-hour time limit for longer races, for the 1st boat to cross the finish line.  All other boats must finish within an hour of that time to qualify for the race.  If by chance you violate a basic rule of racing, please take your penalty turns and get back in the race.  Please remember these races are supposed to be fun for all!  Please save any cut-throat tactics for sanctioned regattas.

beer can pursuit (race?)

*Announcing the Tuesday Evening “Beer Can” Race*

The origin of the “beer can” race is an informal mid week sail with a
minimum of testosterone and a mild blend of adrenaline. The tradition was
that you could follow the boat in front by the beer cans in the water. Of
course we no longer deep six beer cans but the nomenclature endures.
Our sail begins with an unregulated start at 1530 outside the entrance to
Landings Harbor. We will then sail down the river to Green 19
(approximately 2.4nm) returning to Landings harbor at 1700. Chili and beer
will be served on the porch immediately following.

The wrinkle is this: When the first boat turns the mark, ALL boats turn
and head for home. The purpose here is to have everyone finish about the
same time to partake of the above. OR you can turn around when you wish to
get to the beer and supper first.

The “race” is open to ALL sailboats and guests are invited and
ENCOURAGED. The purpose is to introduce anyone regardless of skill to the
fun of sailing. You do not have to be a member of anything to participate.
You can learn as much or as little as you like.

If you are one of the many who say they would like to sail, but do not
want to race….this is perfect for you because the only race is for the

Our opening event will take place on April 14 to be followed on April 28.
